Soumak flatwoven rug from eastern Caucasus,Kuba district,west coast of the Caspian Sea

Size: 6′.9″x3′.9″ (206×114 cm)

This very unusual Kuba Bidjow Soumak flatweave displays a pile design on a blue ground of ascending palmettes,winged shapes,leaves and other geometric vegetal devices.On several edges of the field is a broken keyhole reciprocal edging band.The attractive green main border hosts floral modules.The outer ivory minor border shows rosettes,leaves and profile flowers.At one end is a partial knotted warp net.The handle is soft and pliable.The piece is in good condition with dark browns naturally corroded because of oxidation.
