Anatolian Rugs
Turkish rugs are also known as Anatolian Rugs. Carpet weaving in Turkey has a continuous history going back to at least the 13th century. The 15th century saw the Holbein and Lotto rugs which are depicted in European Old Master Paintings. These rugs and later medallion and star carpets were produced in Usak (Oushak). Village weavings from Yastiks (cushion covers) to runners and scatter rugs are primarily village creations. Among the many centers are: Gordes, Kula, Bergama, Milas, Konya, Erzurum and the Yuruk tribal group. Urban weaves include Hereke, Kumkapi and Sivas. Armenian and Greek weavers have made a significant contribution to the art of the Turkish rugs.
