Soumak flatwoven rug from eastern Caucasus

Age: circa 1870

Measurements: 6′.5"x4′.7" (196×140 cm)

The attractive abrashed tomato red field is centered by four unusual medallions in blue and green.There is a delightful scatter fill of various rosettes and rocket ship like devices.The brown main border has a zig-zag pattern with polychrome fillers and is flanked by ivory minor borders.There are also two additional borders:an inner keyhole reciprocal and an outer running dog or wave design.All the colors are from natural and vegetable sources.The condition is good except for some wear,two small patches and loose side cords.
