Soumak carpet from eastern Caucasus,Kuba district,west coast of the Caspian Sea

Age: circa 1850

Size: 8′.4"x5′.10" (254×178 cm)

This early Soumak carpet shows a light red field dominated by a pole medallion of two navy cartouches with octagon centers,and six smaller yellow octagons.There is a plethora of interesting details including a human figure,several animals in different shapes and sizes,a cross,a sparrow,two date panels,quincunxes,tiny octagons,rosettes,diamonds,boxes,color samplers and other smaller elements.The yellow kilim style main border spaces out at one end employs hooked and stepped octagons enclosing wonky stars and positioned by irregular triangle fillers.The flanking blue minor borders employ rosette motifs.The inner minor abrashes to red at one end.There are four barber pole lines present.Although in compromised condition this is a very interesting antique soumak weaving.The handle is soft and pliable.All the colors are from natural and vegetable sources.The piece has serious condition issues.SOLD
