Soumak carpet from eastern Caucasus,Kuba district,west coast of the Caspian Sea

Age: circa 1875

Size: 9′.3"x7′.5" (282×226 cm)

The warm madder red field displays three equal indented lozenge medallions,each centered by a light rose octagon,and flanked by eight yellow lesser octagons,characteristic "rocket ships" and edged on the sides by a variety of geometric rosettes.In addition there are stars,knots,diamonds,leaves and other interesting elements in the field.The light blue main border employs a chain of complex quatrefoil medallions and is flanked by ivory minor borders with palmette and rosette meanders.There are four barber pole lines present.At each end is a narrow soumak band followed by a wide knotted warp net.The selvedges are in plain weave technique.All the colors are from natural sources.The dark brown is naturally corroded.The piece is in good condition except for some minor wear.SOLD
