Shirvan rug from eastern Caucasus,west coast of the Caspian Sea

Age: circa 1900

Size: 6′.6″x3′.11″ (198×119 cm)

The old ivory ground shows a side to side and end to end diamond lattice enclosing shield shaped palmettes in a one way pattern,with smaller pentagonal bosses enclosing stylized flowers,at the vertices of the lattice.The field is edged by a wave design with colorful bases.The abrashed tomato red main border hosts strongly geometric hexagonal flowers filled with quartered diamonds and separated by small stylized plants.There is an outer minor border with rosettes present.There are three narrow barber pole and several solid lines in the border system.At each end is a beige flatwoven band followed by warp loops or a knotted fringe.All the colors are from natural sources.The piece is in good condition.
