Shirvan long rug with Karagashli design from eastern Caucasus,west coast of the Caspian Sea

Age: circa 1885

Size: 9′.6″x4′.1″ (290×124 cm)

The navy field displays five complete stepped hexagonal forms creating a pole medallion ending in complete and fractional red sunbursts.With each hexagon is a multicolor banded element.The stepping includes an inner ivory pattern and an outer green surround.In the field is a wild variety of:human figures,animals,Kufic border elements,boxes,lazy S’s,cross stitches,pendants,stylized flowers and other smaller motifs.The yellow main border shows large S’s interspersed with slanted stepped elements forming large S’s.The flanking minor borders in dark blue and red both display colorful small octagons.There are four barber pole lines and a colorful innermost field edge of zig zag triangles in camel,madder and yellow.At the top end is a kilim strip followed by the remains of a knotted warp net.All the colors are from natural sources.The piece is in good condition.SOLD
