Shirvan prayer rug from eastern Caucasus,west coast of the Caspian Sea

Age: circa 1870

Measurements: 4′.10"x4′.0" (147×122 cm)

This is a particularly fine classic ivory Shirvan prayer rug with an allover lozenge field and spandrel lattice pattern.The units display a wide variety of distinct colorful flowers.The pointed niche arch is sawtoothed on both sides and is ornamented by undulating vine with star like flowers.The soft red main border is decorated with a classic S pattern in the Shirvan manner.The flanking navy minors alternate X’s and crosses,while the inner and outer guards are bitonal reciprocals.There are five barber pole lines and an innermost quincunx stripe.The kilim ends are almost intact and there are red soumak finishings.All the colors are from natural sources.The condition of this beautiful rug is good.SOLD
