Shirvan rug from eastern Caucasus,west coast of the Caspian Sea

Age: circa 1890

Size: 6′.2″x3′.7″ (188×109 cm)

The ivory ground shows a diamond lattice enclosing a one way pattern of palmettes with smaller floral elements at the lattice vertices.Along the sides of the lattice are little rosettes,nested diamonds,lazy S’s and other interesting devices.At the outer edge of the field is an angular wave pattern with colorful bases.The red main border hosts an unusual pattern of hexagons fringed by small stylized flowers,with four combs at the corners and separated by paired forked elements.The minor borders in dark brown and dark blue show matching patterns of rosettes and tiny crosses.There are four barber pole lines in the border system.At one end of the rug is a beige kilim followed by a warp knots.All the colors are from natural sources.The rug is in good condition.
