Shakarlou Qashqai rug from south west Persia (Iran)

Size: 7′.2″x5′.4″ (218×163 cm)

This rare and interesting south Persian piece shows a striped multicolor field including shades of red,shades of blue,burgundy,yellow,ivory,shades of green and chocolate.The stripes alternate decoration with botehs and meanders with palmettes.The dark blue main border stylistically blends in with the field and shows two columns of hooked motifs in various colors on the sides and single column on the ends.An irregularity sought after by connoisseurs.The main border is flanked by green and red and yellow and burgundy minor borders.At the top end the minor borders are particularly narrow.At each end is a characteristic Qashqai checkerboard flatwoven strip in red,blue and burgundy.The selvedges are banded in traditional south Persian manner.The handle is pliable and the wool is soft.All the colors are from natural sources.The condition of this great piece is good.
