Shahsavan soumak mafrash/ cradle/kargo bag from north west Persia (Iran)

Age: circa 1870

Size: 3′.10″x1′.7″ (117×48 cm)

This complete soumak weaving displays a red field with connected hooked ivory hexagons enclosing red cartouches.The field is additionally decorated with lazy S’s.Both ivory borders are totally voided while others,with yellow grounds,display stretched rhomboids.The pattern is attractive on both long and short sides.There are several barber pole lines in the border system.The back or the base is striped in blue and light brown.The weave is fine and the handle is firm and crisp.This piece was used as a cradle or storage bag.All the colors are from natural sources.The piece is in good condition.
