Marasali prayer rug from Kuba district,eastern Caucasus,west coast of the Caspian Sea

Age: circa 1875

Size: 4′.8″x3′.10″ (142×117 cm)

The navy blue field displays four offset rows of reversing botehs with one boteh under the niche arch and the pattern continues through the spandrels.Scattered in the field are zigzags,stylized flowers and small diamonds.The pointed ivory niche arch hosts additional botehs/pigeons is attached to the borders and the ivory main border is en suite.The flanking minor borders show classic snowflake designs in various colors.There are four black and white barber pole lines in the border system.At each end is a narrow beige flatweave ending in knotted warp groups.All the colors are from natural sources.The handle is soft and pliable.The piece is in good condition.
