Malayer carpet from north west Persia (Iran)

Age: circa 1890

Measurements: 10′.7"x5′.4" (323×163 cm)

The deep blue field displays a compact ivory diamond lattice pattern enclosing extremely stylized flowerheads.There is a subtle abrash (original color change) to the dark blue.At the side edges of the field are red and green triangles.The ecru main border alternates aubergine S’s on the sides and similar camel elements on the ends,with extremely stylized bracketed palmettes.The brown minor guards are patterned with rosettes and paired triangles.There are several plain solid lines in red,yellow and dark brown.The foundation is all cotton with a single weft and the pile is wool.All the colors are from natural sources.The condition of the rug is good.
