Makri/Megri prayer rug,today’s Fethiye,Mugla,south west Anatolia,Turkey

Age: circa 1890

Dimensions: 4′.2"x3′.6" (127×107 cm)

The medium blue field has a stepped mihrab arch,a long multifloral pendant,and an internal surround of colorful carnations.The yellow spandrels display connected stars and the yellow continues along the sides and beneath the field as an inner border.There is a honeycomb panel above the prayer arch and separating the spandrels from the panel is a narrow blue strip.There are five decorated borders including an ivory main stripe with a polychrome quincunx pattern,a dark brown band with colorful flowers,a green second major border also decorated in quincunx design and finally an innermost red frame with stylized "S"s.There is a red and yellow barberpole line surrounding the whole.The wide blue selvedges are perfectly preserved and there are narrow matching kilim stripes at each end of the rug.The colors are from natural sources.The condition is good including naturally corroded brown.SOLD
