Lesghi rug from Kuba district,eastern Caucasus,west coast of the Caspian Sea

Size: 5′.5″x3′.1″ (165×94 cm)

The red field shows three characteristic Lesghi stars in ivory,green and red,with the central motif enclosed within a floating blue square.The fillers include:lazy S’s,quincunxes,diamonds,capital H’s,hooked and horned bars,and other interesting elements.There are five dotted barber pole lines in the border system,and similar lines edge the stars and the central panel.The ivory main border shows discreet hooked lozenges.There are variations in the main border including rosettes,triangles and dots as fillers and a change in the size of the hooked lozenges.The outer minor border hosts a reciprocal keyhole pattern in black and blue and the inner border features small diamonds on green.The handle is soft and pliable.At the top end is a narrow flatwoven band followed by a broader macrame warp finish.All the colors are from natural sources.The piece is in good condition.
