Kuba rug (548) – SOLD

5' 8" x 4' 0" (173 x 122 cm)

Kuba rug from eastern Caucasus, west coast of the Caspian Sea

Age: circa 1840

Size: 5′.8″x4′.0″ (173×122 cm)

The beautiful yellow background shows an elaborate allover Kirdaghi pattern in the Chi Chi style with rosettes, leaves, animals, diamonds, dots, stylized flowers and other geometric elements. There are nine vertical repeats in the field. The ivory main border is unusual for this design and shows a well rendered “crab” pattern flanked by dark brown minor borders with floating rosettes and inner and outer reciprocal keyhole frames in red and blue. There are five narrow barber pole lines in the border system. At each end is a soumak flatweave followed by a complex macrame knotted warp net.The blue selvedges are characteristic of Kuba rugs. The weave is fine and very tight. The surface is velvety and tactile. All the colors are from natural sources. The piece is in good pile and condition except for some loose selvedges and minor repairs. This is the best of type and very collectable.SOLD
