Armenian Kazak rug from southwest Caucasus

Age: circa 1890

Size: 8′.1"x5′.1" (246×155 cm)

This southwest Caucasian piece is signed in Armenian (a.r.k.) and displays on the red ground,three floating medallions of which two are nested and stepped with square side projections in medium blue,light blue,red,ivory and green.The central abrashed (original color change) blue octagon is accented with camel,blue,red,ivory and salmon.There are eight smaller camel medallions with hooked centers scattered about.In addition there are quincunxes,a cross and a comb in the field.The notably abrashed blue main border displays an angular meander enclosing stars and assorted small geometric devices.The guard stripes are grounded in ivory and red and both display a squared tendril and three leaf clover in red,green,blue,yellow and aubergine.There are three reciprocal bitonal wave pattern lines in the border system and an additional one edging the field.At the top end the flatweave is sewn under.The handle is pliable and the weave is fine.The colors are on the soft side.The condition of this unusul piece is good.
