Karatchoph rug (496) – SOLD

6' 11" x 5' 2" (211 x 157 cm)

Karatchoph Kazak rug from Armenia, southwest Caucasus

Age: circa 1885

Size: 6′.11"x5′.2" (211×157 cm)

The green ground is closely covered by two ivory squares and a central hooked rectangle.Around is an innermost border of internally hooked square pattern. The characteristic Karatcoph checkerboard pattern is manifested in an inner border and frames around each smaller square. The visible irregularities in weavings indicate a true rustic piece. The wide border system is centered by an ivory slanted and geometric S pattern band, along with a yellow ground square rosette patterned stripe, two red and green bitonal keyhole reciprocals and five multicolor barber pole lines. The size is particularly attractive and unusual. The three cord selvedges are original and at each end is a flatweave finish. All the colors are from natural sources. The handle is soft and pliable. The piece is in good condition.SOLD
