Karatchoph Kazak rug from southwest Caucasus,Armenia

Size: 7′.6″x6′.0″ (229×183 cm)

This unusual and interesting Karatchoph variant shows an octagonal central medallion doubly edged with curly hooks in ivory,dark brown and green,and there is a central square focus.There are four ivory star filled boxes and eight smaller squares with double hooked elements.There are four checkerboard triangular flaps squaring the medallion.The tomato red field is natural madder.There are two big dates and a small illegible inscription.There are rosettes and stars scattered about the field.The dark blue main border employs four arrow like motifs in various colors.The minor borders both show keyhole reciprocals in ivory and dark brown.There are four red and yellow barber pole lines in the border system.At the top end is a narrow flatweave followed by a macrame warp band while at the bottom is a flatweave followed by warp loops.All the colors are from natural sources.The piece is in good condition.
