Karatchoph Kazak rug from Armenia, southwest Caucasus

Age: circa 1875

Dimensions: 5′.8"x3′.4" (173×102 cm)

This is an unusually small version of the alternative Karatchoph design:the blue green field has two ivory boxes with internal hooked elements and a third with a central golden yellow hooked square. In addition there is a smaller red cruciform motif present as well as various geometric devices. There are no square shouldered mihrab elements in the field. The ground is attractively abrashed from blue green to green. The ivory main border has a colorful pattern of detached hooked diamonds between red and blue reciprocals. The wool is soft and velvety. The rug is rich in colors. The weave is fine and the handle is pliable. The condition of the rug is good.SOLD
