Karagashli rug from Kuba district,eastern Caucasus,west coast of the Caspian Sea

Age: circa 1870

Size: 4′.10″x3′.3″ (147×99 cm)

The abrashed medium blue field shows the characteristic Karagashli design of three red shaped oblique medallions,each centered by a light blue rosette.There are four connecting red goosenecks,eight ivory snowflakes and six stylized flowers.The abrashed honey yellow main border features slant leaf and chalice design and is flanked by minor borders with stepped rosettes in various colors.There are two ivory tertiary borders with floating barred S’s and two red and white narrow barber pole lines.At the top end is a narrow flatwoven finish.The blue selvedges are intact and the handle is soft and pliable.All the colors care from natural sources.The piece is in good condition.
