Gendje rug from southern Caucasus

Age: circa 1885

Size: 8′.0″x4′.2″ (244×127 cm)

This iconic south Caucasian long rug shows a diagonal stripe pattern in ivory, yellow, green, aubergine, shades of red and blue. Each stripe shelters up to five floriated botehs. The drawing is spacious unlike the majority of Gendje weavings. In between the main stripes are narrow navy diagonals with stylized double ended botehs. The ivory main border hosts a color sectioned arrowhead chain. The minor borders in yellow and blue both present angular meanders enclosing rosettes. There are four barber pole lines in the border system. The selvedges are widely banded in pile colors. At the top end is a narrow macrame warp band. The pile is high and then handle is firm. All the colors are from natural sources. The condition of this beautiful rug is good.
