Derbent rug from eastern Caucasus,west coast of the Caspian Sea

Age: dated 1288=1871

Size: 4′.9″x3′.0″ (145×91 cm)

Dated 1288 and illegibly inscribed,this small scatter rug employs a dark blue ground supporting a lozenge lattice enclosing a one way palmette pattern.Detail colors include:ivory,camel,three shades of red,two shades of green,two shades of blue,brown and yellow.The triple border system includes:a central ivory band with detailed colorful S motif,inscriptions and a date;two minor borders with meanders,zig zags and other floral elements.There is an outermost barber pole line surrounding the whole.At each end is a multicolor striped flatweave panel followed by warps knotted into nets.The wool is soft and the handle is pliable.The colors are deep and vibrant.The condition is good with a naturally corroded brown especially at the top inner minor border.The ends are original and the side cords are enforced.
