Bakhtiari rug from south west Persia (Iran)

Age: circa 1900

Size: 6′.7″x4′.7″ (201×140 cm)

The noble ivory ground displays a central pole medallion of four slightly compressed hexagons in red and navy, each displaying a winged motif creating a palmette. The pole medallion is uniformly fringed with small rosettes on stems.Along the sides are half winged figures.Colors include:shades of red, shades of blue, green, burgundy and ivory. The main border shows a Kurdish version of the ubiquitous crab design on a golden yellow ground. The red minor borders both show boteh chains. There are two tertiary borders with red and blue triangles, and red, blue and ivory diagonal stripes.Unusually the foundation is all wool and this indicates a mountainous origin. At one end is a red and blue brocaded finish followed by a braided line while at the other end is a red kilim. At the bottom end the warps are gathered into braided tassels. All the colors are from natural sources. The piece is in good condition.
