Shirvan rug from eastern Caucasus,west coast of the Caspian Sea

Age: circa 1875

Dimensions: 7'.7"x4'.0" (231x122 cm)

The deep red field is closely covered by an elongated light blue keyhole pole medallion.There are four ivory octagons anchoring the main device and there is a scatter fill of tiny diamonds and stepped plant forms filling the main panel.In addition there are botehs in the corners of the field and small octagonal elements in the side reserves.A yellow band decorated with comb-like motifs edges the pole medallion.The ivory main border has a classic Caucasian chalice and slant leaf design and is flanked by two minors with multicolor striped sections and four barber pole lines.All the colors are from natural sources.The original ends and sides are present including the flatwoven kilims.
