Shirvan rug from eastern Caucasus,west coast of the Caspian Sea

Age: dated 1321=1903

Size: 4'.6"x3'.3" (137x99 cm)

The saturated dark indigo ground displays the characteristic Karagashli pattern with two nested hexagonal medallions and red sunburst finials.On the sides of the medallions are diagonally striped tabs.Along the horizontal central line are Perepedil style ram's horn motifs,animals,a date,hooked lozenges,squares and tiny stylized flowers.The very colorful main border is diagonally striped in numerous colors and is flanked by green/red and black/blue keyhole reciprocals and three bitonal barber pole lines.At each end is a narrow ivory flatwoven strip.The handle is exceptionally soft and pliable and the wool is of high quality.The piece is in good condition except for minor problems.It is being restored professionally.
