Shahsavan soumak sofreh from north west Persia (Iran)

Age: circa 1885

Size: 3'.7"x3'.1" (109x94 cm)

The navy field displays a 2x2 Memling Gul pattern with one column grounded in ivory and the other in red.A thin barber pole line horizontally divides the field and there are many small four legged animals,stars and combs.The ivory main border features a flattened hexagon pattern in which there are eight point stars and doubled dividing small H's.Barber pole lines surround both the field and the ends.At each end is a broad flatwoven panel in dark brown and light purple.All the colors are from natural sources.The white is cotton and the rest of the piece is wool.The piece is in good condition except for a couple of very small holes.
