Kuba rug from Eastern Caucasus,west coast of the Caspian Sea

Age: dated 1311=1893

Size: 5'.3"x3'.4" (160x102 cm)

The dark blue field supports a close hexagon lattice in ivory,red and blue enclosing a repeat of red jagged medallions.The bold ivory stylized Kufesque border shows crosses or octofoils bracketed by pseudo-calligraphic motifs.The yellow minor borders both feature a geometric meander with flowers.There are four narrow barber pole lines,three in red and white and one in navy and ivory.At each end is a narrow red soumak line followed by a flatwoven kilim.The selvedges are in yellow and red.The handle is soft and pliable.All the colors are from natural sources.The condition of this unusual rug is good with even pile and naturally corroded dark brown.
