Soumak flatwoven rug from Eastern Caucasus,west coast of the Caspian Sea

Age: circa 1870

Size: 7'.0"X4'.8" (213x142 cm)

This rare Caucasian Soumak flatweave features a madder red field adorned with three navy flattened hexagonal medallions each enclosing a four cartouche-palmette pattern.There are eight small octagons,knots,rosettes,lazy S's,diamonds and other interesting devices.Extremely stylized flowers project from each medallion.The light blue main border employs a varient of the dragon vine at each end and the pattern dissolves into discrete elements along the sides.There are two flanking ivory connected cross pattern minor borders,four two tone barber pole lines,an outer band in red and dark brown running dog reciprocal and a dark blue keyhole motif at the edges of the field.At each end is a wide knotted warp net.All the colors are from natural sources.The piece is in good condition.
